Howell L. (Bud) James, age 98, of Erie, died Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Springhill in Erie.
He was born in Erie, PA on September 12, 1917, a son of the late Howell L. and Cora Swan James. Bud graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1935 and attended Grove City College.
He worked at American Sterilizer for three years, then served as a medic in the U.S. Army Yankee Division during World War II in the European Theatre.
Following the service, he joined his father in the insurance business, Tanner, James and Colwell for 37 years until his retirement in 1983.
He was a former member of Wayside Presbyterian Church, and a former member of numerous local clubs and civic organizations.
Bud was an avid golfer and enjoyed all sports. His happiest times were spent with family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Teal James, a brother J. Douglas James, a brother Robert A. James, and a sister Margaret A. James.
Survivors include a daughter Cheri Stellfox and her husband Richard of Pittsburgh; two sons: H. Lester James, III. and his longtime companion Patricia Karle of Erie, Alan James and his wife Margaret of Fairview; one sister Janet Hill of Wilmington, Delaware; seven grandchildren: Kendell (Emily) Stellfox, Teal Stellfox, and Cori (Dan) Weber, Brittany (David) Smith, H. Lester (Gina) James, IV, Patrick James, and Tera (Zachary) Boaeuf, and six great grandchildren.
Private arrangements are under the care of Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 602 West 10th Street.
Burial in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
