Herbert F. Tufts died on Sunday, October, 14, 2018 at Saint Vincent’s Hospital surrounded by his family.
Herb was born on November 29, 1928 the only son of Herbert and Regina Moser Tufts in Erie. He was preceded in death by his parents and the love of his life, his wife of 67 years, Theresa (Tessie) Tufts on September 10, 2018.
Herb graduated from Strong Vincent High School, class of 1949, where he excelled in sports. He ran track, was a three year started and Captain of the Basketball team and a four year starter on Vincent’s varsity Baseball team. In the ninth grade Herb was signed by the New York Giants Baseball Organization (now the San Francisco Giants) and boarded a train the day after graduating from high school to play pro ball. He stayed with the Giants Organization for two years until an injury and the United States Army ended his professional career. Herb would eventually become a member of the US Army Baseball Team that entertained the troops during the Korean War. Following his service time Herb would return to Erie and play baseball in the Glenwood League for a short time. He would go on to coach Boys Baseball for three years and influenced many young players by his integrity and his kindness.
Herbie was a fine woodworker, loved the St. Louis Cardinals and his “idol” Stan “The Man” Musial.
Herbie worked for 42 years at the Hammermill in Erie where he made many friends. He and Tessie spent fourteen summers with friends and family on Lake Erie on their boat “The Irish Tess” making unforgettable memories.
Herb’s greatest accomplishment though was that of being the “best Dad ever.” He is survived by his daughter, Susan (Jeff) DeSantis and his son, Jack (Kathi) Tufts. Three cherished granddaughters, Katy Tufts, Lindsay DeSantis, and Abby DeSantis.; A special niece, Peggy Cronin Johnson (Cris Tayor), and two great nieces, Mikki (DJ) Peters and Ali (Nathan) Helgert. Many other nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
The family would like to thank Herb’s caregiver, Mary Heberle for the wonderful devoted care she gave him these past months.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street. Services were private and held at the convenience of the family.
