HELEN R. HAYNES JOHNSON

Helen R. Haynes Johnson, age 99, passed away peacefully at Sara Reed Senior Living on Wednesday, December 22, 2016.

Born in Edinboro, PA on February 7, 1917, she was the daughter of the late George and Rubie Galloway Haynes.   Helen was a graduate of Edinboro High School.  She was a homemaker and part-time sales clerk in the Boston Store jewelry department.

She and her late husband of 70 years, Gerald “Jerry” Johnson, spent 20 years wintering in Zephyrhills, Florida.  She enjoyed family vacations, crafting, crocheting bookmarks, playing bingo at Sarah Reed, and spending time with her family. A long time member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, she was an active member and past president of both the Ruth Guild and LCW.  During her children’s school years, Helen was active in Scouts and PTA.  Known as a gracious, loving and devoted lady, she will be deeply missed by family and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by brothers Edgar and Benjamin Haynes, a sister Dorothy Steadman, and a daughter Beverly J. Hart. 

Helen is survived by her two children, Robert Johnson and his wife Cheryl of North Olmsted, Ohio, Barbara Johnson-Johnson and her husband Timothy of Erie, and son in-law Francis Hart of Erie.  She is also survived by three grandchildren, Michele Dieterich and her husband Todd of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Mark Johnson and his wife Elizabeth of Hudson, Ohio, and Jennifer Doyle and her husband Jim of Westlake, Ohio; eight great grandchildren, Christian (friend Kasey), Hope and Hannah Dieterich; Nicholas, Nathan and Caroline Johnson; Brian and Julia Doyle and two great-great grandchildren, Nathan Dieterich and Colton Latak. 

Friends may call at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 from 2-6 pm and are invited to attend a service at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach St. at 11am on Thursday, December 29, 2016 with the Rev. Erik Young and the Rev. Roy Washill co-officiating.

Burial will follow at Erie County Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to the charity of one’s choice.
