Helen Hight

December 23, 1919 — September 4, 2017

Helen Grogan Hight, age 97 of Erie, passed away quietly at Forestview Skilled Nursing Center on Monday, September 4, 2017.

Helen was born in Kenmare, North Dakota, a daughter of the late Dr. John S. and Magna Melby Grogan.

Mrs. Hight graduated from high school in Wadena, MN and the University of Minnesota where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.  She also attended Gannon University and the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa where she lived for 11 ½ years, from 1970-1981.

She worked with the American Red Cross Civilian War Relief Department during World War II, was stationed in Rome, and met her future husband Robert there. They were married in Minneapolis November 12, 1946.

She was a member of P.E.O., Chapter X, and the Martha Washington Club, Johannesburg, South Africa.  Mrs. Hight was a former member of A.A.U.W., Woman’s Club of Erie, and Gardeners of Glenwood.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, a daughter Karen, a brother, Dr. John Grogan and a sister, Joan Weber.

Survivors include her daughter, Katherine Bain and her husband Howard of Los Altos, CA; her son-in-law, Bruce Zabst of Indianapolis, IN; four grandchildren, Michael Zabst (Susanne) of Dubai, UAE, Mark Zabst (Nora) of Gaithersburg, MD, Julia Bain Andrews (Robert) of Rowayton, CT and Andrew Bain of Los Angeles, CA along with five great-grandchildren, Alex, Vincent, Sidney, Josephine and Helena.

A memorial service will be held in the summer of 2018 with details to be announced.
