Harry Johnson

December 14, 1929 — June 4, 2014

     Harry W. Johnson, 84, of Erie, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at St. Vincent Health Center.  He was born December 14, 1929, in Erie, son of the late Carl R. and Leona E. Nelson Johnson.  A 1948 graduate of Tech Memorial High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served with the Third Armored Division during the Korean Conflict.  He was a Press Room Supervisor for the Times Publishing Company where he worked for 37 years retiring in 1991.  He was a member of Luther Memorial Church.  A lover of the outdoors, Mr. Johnson was an avid gardener.  He especially enjoyed rhododendrons and developed, registered, and named the hybrid rhododendron "Presque Isle".  He was a member and past president of the Great Lakes Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society.  He was a member of the Erie Lions Club and served as treasurer of the Lions District 14F Leader Puppy Program.  He was also a member and past chairman of SVEA Lodge, No. 296, VASA Order of America. 
     Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marjorie A. Wernicki Johnson; three sons, John Johnson and wife Brenda of Erie, Alan Johnson and wife Lorraine of Waterford, and Russell Johnson and wife Sherie of Erie; six grandchildren, Neil Johnson and wife Leah of Cornwall, NY, Glen Johnson and wife Tracy, Christine Denelsbeck and husband Edward, all of Pittsburgh, Paul Johnson and wife Kendal of Lynchburg, VA, and Megan and Trevor Johnson, both of Erie; eight great-grandchildren, Reid and Quinn Johnson of Cornwall, NY, Greta Johnson, and Margaret, Penelope, and Edward Denelsbeck, all of Pittsburgh, and Gabriel and Adrian Johnson of Lynchburg, VA; a brother, Richard Johnson and wife Pat of Fairview; two sisters, Doris Forbes and husband Milton of Edinboro and Betty Dooley of Florida; four sisters-in-law, Pat Johnson of Tacoma, WA, Marty Johnson and Virginia Kochanczyk, both of Erie, and Carol Hopkins of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews.
     Two brothers, Charles and Marshall Johnson, preceded him in death.
     Friends may call Friday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle St.  A service will be held at Luther Memorial Church, 225 West 10th St., Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William Coleman officiating.  Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Erie Crawford County Burial Detail.
