Guy I. Buell, age 85, of formerly of Fairview, passed away Monday, November 3, 2014 at Westlake Woods.
He was born in Erie on July 28, 1929, son of the late George and Helen Demetter Buell.
Guy was a graduate in 1947 from Strong Vincent High School and received his B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan, his master’s degree in Education from Penn State University, his Doctorate of Juries Prudence from LaSalle University, where he was also an adjunct professor. He also served in the United States Army from 1954 until 1956.
He was employed at the Fairview School District for 30 years, retiring in 1987. During his time there he taught high school English, social studies, and served as an administrator.
He was the Mayor of Fairview Boro from 1982 until 1991. Guy was a member of Fairview Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday school. He also taught 55 Alive classes in West County and was a tax helper with H & R Block in Girard for many years in his retirement.
Guy was a member of Lake Erie Lodge No. 347 F & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Erie, Zem Zem Temple Shrine and the Erepa Grotto. He was a life member of the Erie Maennerchor Club and a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of West Erie County. He was a member of the Times Old Newsies. Guy loved to be out and about in the community and in the public eye. He ran the chains for many years with the Fairview Football program. Guy walked around the former Fairview Boro as his daily exercise, but also as his way to stay in touch with his constituents. Guy enjoyed friendship and was a good friend to many. He will be missed by all that knew him.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a sister, Joanne Kubeja.
Guy is survived by his wife, Dolores Olesky Buell, whom he married on September 19, 1959; a son, Christopher Donoghue and his wife Carol of Selden, NY; a daughter, Julie Jarvi and a grandson, Benjamin Jarvi both of Fairview.
Friends may attend a memorial service Saturday November 8th at 11am at the Fairview Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Charles Cammarata officiating. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Fairview Presbyterian Church, 4264 Avonia Rd., Fairview, PA 16415. Arrangements entrusted to the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main St. Girard.
