Glenn Evans

Glenn Ewing Evans, age 98, formerly of Butler, PA, passed away Tuesday November 19, 2013 at Manchester Commons in Erie.

He was born in Carnegie, PA on May 30, 1915. Glenn had two brothers, Harold and Edward, and one sister Olive. He was a graduate of Langley High School and Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.

While a student at Carnegie Institute, Glenn worked full time for the American Cyanamid Corporation as a chemist. Upon his graduation in 1941, he joined The Koppers Company in Pittsburgh, PA as a chemical engineer. After serving in several key positions, Glenn was appointed plant engineer for the Petrolia, PA facility in 1957. During his time with Koppers, Glenn oversaw several major expansion projects at the facility. He worked for Koppers until his retirement in 1980.

Glenn enjoyed fishing, many social activities and was an avid golfer. At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of the Butler Country Club. Glenn was also a long time member of the Butler Rotary Club and St. Peters Episcopal Church in Butler. In retirement Glenn delivered Meals on Wheels for many years prior to his relocation to Erie in 2007.

Glenn was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Julia Fulton, to whom he was married from 1947 until her death in 1991 and his second wife, the former Dolores Stehle, to whom he was married from 1992 until her death in 2007. Glenn is survived by his son John and daughter-in-law Karen of Erie and their daughters Betsy Evans of Alexandria, VA and Katy Evans of New Orleans, LA. His granddaughters were the apple of Glenn’s eye.

All of those who knew and cared for Glenn are invited to call on the family on Saturday, November 23rd from 2 to 4 pm at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26thStreet (at Powell Ave.). Glenn’s cremated remains will be interred beside Julia’s in the Memorial Garden at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Butler at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Presbyterian Homes Caring for Life Fund, 1225 School Road, Erie, PA 16505.
