George Wisniewski

     George F. Wisniewski, 89, died unexpectedly Thurs., Dec. 19, 2013 at St. Vincent Health Center.  He was born Aug. 6, 1924 in Erie, son of the late George and Pauline Hoppe Wisniewski.  A lifelong resident of Erie, he graduated from Academy High School in 1943.  A U.S. Army veteran of WWII, he served with the 7th Armored Division and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge, earning a Bronze Star and a Silver Star.  He was a sub-contractor in the home building industry in Erie for 35 years and most recently worked in maintenance for the Erie County Court House for eight years retiring in 1989.

     George and his wife Shirley were a loving couple who happily enjoyed each other and were married for 67 years.  They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in Nov. 2006 at a party given by their children and grandchildren.  They square danced for over 35 years, taught round dancing for 25 of those years, were members of several square dance clubs and ballroom dance clubs, and danced at retirement homes for the residents’ entertainment. George taught line dancing at Mercy Center on Aging after his retirement.  George and Shirley loved to travel, visiting 48 states and making many trips to Europe, Mexico and Canada.  George was a WW II re-enactor, and his hobbies included music, playing cards and games, and working around the house.  He was a very positive person, never saying anything bad about anyone and was a joy to live with.  He was anxiously awaiting the upcoming summer weddings of two of his grandchildren.

     Survivors include his sweetheart "Punkin", Shirley Tobias Wisniewski, and their three children, Marian Hamman of Spokane, WA, Donald Wisniewski and wife Jean of Waterford and William Wisniewski and wife Nancy of Meadville.  He is also survived by a sister, Joan Richter of Vale, NC; a brother-in-law, Harvey Tobias and wife Delphine of San Bernardino, CA; ten grandchildren, Becky Anthony, Emily Roth, and Jesse, Zachary, Hannah, Jordan, Naomi, Jillian and Andrea Wisniewski, and Andrew Harvey; and four great-grandchildren.

     He was preceded in death by his twin brother who died at birth and two stepsisters, Barbara Kishbaugh and Grace Kenyon.

     Friends may call Monday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street. A funeral service officiated by Pastor William Wisniewski, son of the deceased, will be held at the funeral home Tuesday at 11 a.m. immediately followed by military honors conducted by Billy Simpson Post No. 470.  Private inurnment will be in Erie Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to Mercy Center on Aging, 444 E.
