George Harrington

October 28, 1929 — August 19, 2013

George L. Harrington, age 83, of Lake City, PA, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 19, 2013, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Albion, PA, on October 28, 1929, the youngest son of the late Chester S. and Annie Lindstrom Harrington.

George graduated from Albion High School and then went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War.

For many years he worked two jobs to support his family, as a garage mechanic and as the furnace man for True Temper in Lake City. He continued to work after retirement, recycling scrap metal and newspapers until a few months before his death.

George lived his life “one day at a time” and was a faithful member of AA for 41 years. He loved dancing, bowling and camping, especially at Cook’s Forest with his friends, and spending time with his family. He was the person to call when you needed help with anything: moving, yard work, plumbing or car repair. He never said no to any request for assistance. No job was too difficult, no problem too large for him. He was always there to help. He continues to help others in his death by donating his body for medical research, a decision he made over 30 years ago.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Herman Harrington; a sister, Hazel Vaught; and a son-in-law, Barry Roy.

He is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Hughes and Mary Anne Smith; a brother, Chester Harrington, Jr.; his children, Laura McCullough and her husband Jim of Henderson, NC; Susan Moyer and her husband Mark Alexa of Erie; Eileen Roy of Lusby, MD; Jane Andrews and Eva Andrews, both of Erie; and Jay Harrington of Lake City; his former wife, Nancy Harrington of Girard, with whom he remained dear friends; his four step-children, Becky Ryan, Vickie Hoover, Michael Sanford and Kerry Menosky; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, September 14, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Fairview Presbyterian Church, 4264 Avonia Road, Fairview, PA 16415. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Make a Wish, 1001 State Street, Erie, PA 16501, or to Bowl for Kids’ Sake, Family Services, 5100 Peach Street, Erie, PA 16509. Arrangements entrusted to the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main Street East, Girard, PA 16417. .
