George F. DePalma, age 94, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2022 in Fredericksburg, VA at Mary Washington Hospital. He was born July 21, 1927 in Erie the son of the late Michael and Lucia (Porrecca) DePalma.
A longtime resident of Erie, George served with the US Army during WWII and following his discharge, he worked on the railroads for 14 years before getting a job with the City of Erie Refuse Department where he retired after 30 plus years of work. During his time with the City of Erie George also worked a second job for many years at Carlisle’s Department store as an all-around handyman. George was an usher at St. Joseph Catholic Church and belonged to their Men’s Society and later joined Our Lady of Peace parish. He enjoyed coaching Little League baseball and basketball when his children were young. George was known as a loving, funny (always had a joke), hard- working, caring and selfless person that would do anything for his family and friends. He loved music and never would turn down the chance to dance. He was a wonderful dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa who will be dearly missed.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean DePalma who he was married to for 68 years. Along with three brothers; L.D. DePalma, John DePalma, Sr., Mario DePalma and his sister, Dora Ohman.
George is survived by his children, Martin DePalma (Evelyn) of Woodbridge, VA; Marcia Ann DePalma of Erie; Mary Ann Desjardin, and Mark DePalma (Jane) of Fredericksburg, VA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandsons.
Friends are invited to call at the Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. on Thursday, March 24, 2022 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Friday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum.
