George Henry Ames, 91, of Erie, died on Monday, May 16, 2016, at the Village at Luther Square. He was born on August 13, 1924, in Erie, son of the late Clarence and Mabel Post Ames.
A Lifelong resident of the Erie area, he attended East High School. George started driving truck for his father and went on to drive for Zalznek Concrete in Corry, and for Clark Concrete in Erie, Branch Trucking in Erie and lastly Dixie-Ohio in Erie where he worked for 25 years, retiring in 1984. He later returned to work as a truck driver for Team Hardinger Transportation. George also worked for Gary's Flower Shoppe making deliveries for the past 20 years. He was an excellent bowler, bowling in Classic Leagues, and traveling to and winning many bowling tournaments. He also excelled in baseball and played in the New York Penn League as a third baseman. He enjoyed going to the casino and betting the horses.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his dear companion, Mary Jane Zaun, who died March 28, 2016, five brothers, Robert, Donald, Howard, Richard and Raymond Ames and two sisters, Agnes Gardner and Alice Fernandez.
Survivors include two sons, David Ames of Erie and Charles Ames and wife Nancy of Bryan, OH; two brothers, Gerald Ames of Erie and William Ames of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Thelma Whipple of Gowanda, NY; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. George is further survived by many dear friends including David Grassi, Jack Cunningham, Gary Maas, Joanie Mason, Christine Szumigala, Bill Schaal, Jim and Debbie Haskins, and Raymond and Marilyn Benim, all of Erie.
Friends may attend a Memorial Service at Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street, Monday, May 23, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Bob Lewis will officiate. Burial will be at Erie Cemetery.
