Gene F. Sonney

Gene F. Sonney, age 97, of Girard, passed away February 11, 2024, at Spring Hill Forest View.

He was born in Mt. Jewett, PA on September 24, 1926, a son to the late Donald A. and Minerva Trimble Sonney.

He attended Harborcreek High School and went on to serve in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre on the destroyer USS Killen.  He worked at General Electric for 43 years until retirement.  He had been a member of the Purple Martin Conservation Association of Edinboro, PA and on its Board of Directors and lifetime member of Perry-Keystone Lodge #392 F&AM. He was also a member of the GE Quarter Century Club, a lifetime member of the G.E. Management Association, and a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church.  He enjoyed hunting and woodworking.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Rose Marie Anderson Sonney, an infant daughter, Patricia Jean Sonney; his brothers, Paul, James “Joe”, Dale, Ralph, Robert Sonney; his sister Juanita Sprague and his grandson, Michael Sonney.

Gene is survived by his three sons, Donald A. Sonney of Columbus, OH, James M. Sonney (Helicia) of Erie, and Thomas C. Sonney (Nancy) of Wattsburg; his two daughters, Jennifer R. Correll (William) of Edinboro and Kathleen J. Bowden (Harry) of North Springfield; his brothers, Dennis Sonney of Tennesee and John Sonney (Diane) of North Carolina.  He is further survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. 

Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main St. E., Girard on Thursday at 4:00pm until the time of the prayer service at 7:00pm.

The family would like to thank Forestview, Woodlands and all the wonderful caregivers, especially Sanela, Niki, Maureen, Carla, Rick, and Lorissa whom he adored.
