Frederick G. Momeyer, age 94, of Millcreek, passed away on Monday, November 19, 2018 at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailor’s Home in Erie.
He was born in Erie on November 28, 1923, the son of the late Carl and Lucille (Harris) Momeyer.
Fred attended Academy High School and joined the U. S. Navy in 1941. He became a 2nd Class Boatswain’s mate and was on active duty until 1950. He served on the U.S.S. James O’Hara APA 90 during WWII. During that time, he fought battles in Sicily, Salerno, North Africa, Saipan, New Guinea, Philippines, Iwo Jima and Leyte Gulf (Mariana Turkey Shoot) where his ship was hit by a Japanese Kamikaze. He then served on the U.S.S. Sanborn APA 193 during the Korean Conflict.
Fred married his wife Betty Keep on “VJ” day, August 14th, 1945 in San Francisco. He worked as a brakeman and conductor for Penn Central/Conrail for 36 years. Fred loved woodworking, cabinet making and loved to travel with his wife, Betty.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, his wife Betty, his granddaughter, Katie Irvine on March 4th, 2004, and a sister Rita Bednar.
Fred is survived by three children, Michael (Valerie Weaver) Momeyer of Erie, Stephen (Kimberly) Momeyer of Athens, GA and Laurie A. (Richard) Irvine of Albion, PA; three grandchildren, Kristopher Momeyer of Lexington, Kentucky, Jamie Momeyer of Athens, GA and Adam Irvine of Albion, PA. Fred is further survived by five great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, (at Powell Avenue,) on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm and on Saturday from 10:00 until the time of the service at 11:00 am. with Rev. Bob Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
