Fred D. Gabler passed away in the early morning of June 18, 2023, at the age of 81 at St. Vincent Hospital after a brief illness. Despite the complications, he faced his last few days with courage and wit – the same way he approached most things in life.
Son of the late Fred and Dorothy (Roth) Gabler, Fred was born on January 9, 1942, in Lackawanna, NY. He was raised in St. Mary’s, PA and later moved to Erie in 1975 where he would meet the love of this life, Theresa.
Fred worked diligently as a machinist at GE from 1977 until his retirement in 2009. He was actively involved in the community as a member at the Siebenbuerger Club, Moose Club, & the Knights of Columbus. He also served as a volunteer for the democratic party and the Barber Center.
In his spare time, Fred enjoyed bowling, golfing, running, cooking, and dancing. Those closest to him also knew that they could find him in his chair watching CNN at most hours of the day. To no surprise, news was always a part of his life.
Most notably, Fred was a family man at heart. He would never miss a family gathering & would always support his loved ones if they had a special event. His family members will remember him most for his wit and laughter like no other. Even with his quiet presence, he would always be good for a quick one-liner.
Fred is survived by his loving wife Theresa Garity Gabler, children John (Terri) Gabler of St. Peters, MO, Laura (Todd) Beckes of Erie, Andrew (Ann) Gabler of North East, Heidi (Ryan) McKelvey of Seattle, WA, stepchildren Christina (Don) Dearborn of Lake City, Julianne (Steven) Fails of Albion, Patricia (Kelly) Twaroski of Lake City, Robert Gregory, 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law Marie Golden, brother-in-law Gerald (Maryann) Garity of Girard, Clyde Garity of Waterford, and Cheryl (Jim) Andrews of Girard.
Friends may call at Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main Street East, Girard, on Wednesday June 21, 2023, from 4:00pm – 7:00pm and are invited to attend a service there on Thursday at 11:00am.
The family would like to give a special thank you to all the nurses and staff at the St. Vincent Emergency Department and ICU who made Fred as comfortable as possible in his final days.
Memorial may be sent to the Lake City Fire Department, 2232 Rice Avenue, Lake City, PA 16423.
