Florence M. Weingard Shields, 74, died Sun., Oct. 9, 2011 at her residence in Greene Twp. following a courageous 19 year battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 6, 1936 in North East, daughter of the late Harold and Goldie Worley Weingard. She attended North East High School and was a bookkeeper for her husband's business, Shield's Exxon, for seventeen years. She also worked as a teller for PNC Bank for six years. A longtime active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, she was a member and past-president of the Ruth Guild, was instrumental in organizing ladies of the church to knit Prayer Shawls, was involved in Angel Food Ministries, played on the softball team for several years and was a founding member of Dufford Terrace Apartments, a non-profit organization sponsored by St. John's. She was also a member of Siebenbuerger Ladies Auxiliary. For many years Florence was a very active Girl Scout Leader in Greene Twp. She enjoyed scroll saw woodworking and crafts, knitting, and most especially spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Weingard and a sister, Alta Miller.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Carl N. Shields; two daughters, Natalie Dobry and husband Andrew of Glen Rock, PA and Heidi Vogt and husband Steven of Venango Twp.; a brother, Harold "Dick" Weingard of Dover, DE; a sister, Peggy Schwartz and husband James of Kempner, TX; four grandchildren, Kyle and Alex Dobry of Glen Rock, PA and Adel and Aeden Vogt of Venango Twp.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Wednesday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle St. A service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach St., Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Roy P. Washill officiating. Burial will be at North East Cemetery.
