Eugene “Gene” Lewis-Murry, age 68, of Erie, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, following a brief illness.
He was born in Panola, Alabama on December 15, 1944, a son of Ida Murry and the late Henry Lewis.
Eugene was a 1963 graduate of Curtze High School in Alabama. He also attended the J.H. Thomas Beauty Academy. Eugene served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
He worked at General Electric retiring in 2001 after 34 years of service.
He was a member of the American Legion Post # 700, the Gem City Elks Lodge No. 328 and the Bay City Lodge No. 68 F. & A.M. Eugene liked football and basketball and loved the outdoors and working in his yard.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Lewis, and two brothers, Johnny B. and Doug Lewis.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Odessa Mae Tartt Lewis-Murry whom he married on Saturday, July 27, 1968, and this Saturday would have been their 45th wedding anniversary. Survivors also include a son, Marvin Lewis-Murry, and three grandchildren: Kristalyn, Jordan and Bryonna Lewis-Murry, and 1 great grandchild, Jadalyn all of Erie. He is further survived by his three brothers: Joe, L.C. and Robert Lewis, all of Alabama, six sisters: Rose, Leona, Mae and Flora Lewis, all of Alabama, Rose of Erie, Jonnie of Connecticut, four sisters-in-laws, Sammie Tartt of Erie, Sharon Hopkins and Flossie and Daisy Lewis of Alabama, two brother-in-laws, 1 uncle, 1 aunt, his favorite cousin, John Hopkins and a very close friend, Tom Crane.
Friends may call at the Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Road, on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend a service at the Second Baptist Church, 757 East 26th Street, on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Allen B. Green officiating.
Interment will be in Erie County Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
