Elsie Singer

     Elsie J. Mantsch Singer, 94, formerly of East 36th Street, Erie, and Parkside at North East, died Monday, May 28, 2018, at LECOM at Presque Isle.  She was born on February 9, 1924, in Erie, daughter of the late John and Mary Kepp Mantsch.  A 1942 graduate of Academy High School, Elsie worked as a secretary for Liberty Mutual Insurance, St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and the American Cancer Society.  She most recently worked for Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of Vital Records, where she retired after many years of service.  She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Thiel Women's Club of Erie and the Erie Maennerchor Ladies Auxiliary.  She bowled with the Lutheran Ladies Bowling League, did volunteer work at her church and enjoyed gardening, reading and crafting.  She made doll clothes that she donated along with dolls to the Salvation Army's Annual Toy Drive.
     She was the beloved wife of 65 years of Harry John Singer, whom she married September 20, 1947, and who died May 5, 2013.  She was further preceded in death by her father, John Mantsch; her mother, Mary Kepp Mantsch Ungar; three brothers, John, Michael and Albert Mantsch; and two sisters, Mary Mantsch Batten and Evelyn Mantsch Adler.
     Survivors include a daughter, Nancy J. Grau and husband Greg of Orchard Park, NY; a brother, Richard Mantsch and wife Mary of North East, Pa.; a grandson, Patrick Grau and wife Kara of Chevy Chase, Md.; a granddaughter, Kelly Gaess and husband Andrew of Philadelphia, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
     Friends may call Thursday from 2 until 6 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2014 Myrtle Street.  A service will be held there Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Matt Dennison of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, North East, Pa., officiating.  Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1500 Freeport Road, North East, PA 16428; St. John's Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach Street, Erie, PA 16502; or to VNA Hospice of Erie County., 2253 W. Grandview Blvd. Erie, PA 16506.
