Eino Niemi

Eino J. Niemi, age 92 of Erie, passed away on May 7, 2015 surrounded by his loving family, at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

He was born in Erie, Pa. on July 17th, 1922 and was the 4th of six sons to the late Matias Matti Niemi and Selma Marie (Wirtala) Niemi.

He served in the US Army Aircorp 1943-1946 as a waist gunner on B25s. Eino was a 34 year employee of Bucyrus-Erie and longtime member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. He was a lifelong Detroit Tiger baseball and Duke basketball fan.

Eino is survived by: his wife Loretta R. (Bukowski) Niemi of 68 years, sons: Jerome J. (Joanne) of Rochester, NY, Donald R. (Kathyrn) of Simpsonville, SC and Allen P. (Christine) of Erie, 7 grandchildren: Eric (Jean) Niemi, Matthew R. Niemi, Stephanie (James) Cappellett, Sara (Frank) LaFuria, Jacob (Marissa) Niemi, Eric (Jennifer) Pipal and Craig Pipal, 11 great grandchildren; 1 brother Paul (Mary Grace) Niemi of Fredericksburg, VA., Mary and Larry Morosky of Erie, PA. and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 W. 26th Street (at Powell Ave) on Monday fron 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Private services and burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
