Edward J. (EJ) Skopow, age 93, passed away on Tuesday December 22, 2020 at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born on Nov. 8, 1927 in Erie, PA, a son of the late John and Caroline Skopow.
Ed served in the U.S. Navy and worked for the Erie Times News for 39 years. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church. He was very athletic, enjoying cross country and downhill skiing, playing in hand ball tournaments, golfing, hiking, and running at Presque Isle with his brother John. He watched Nascar racing and savored his evening toddy of homemade Kahlua. Most of all he loved caring for his family and being around them. His unique sense of humor, his love of nature and his warm and engaging personality will be missed.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years Bernice Mikolajczyk Skopow in 2008, his daughter Cindy Skopow in 2003, six brothers: Joseph, Walter, Casimir, Henry, Stanley and John, and two sisters: Jean Armour and Helen Hogan.
Survivors include his daughter Carol Furman and her husband Timothy, his 4 legged little one Ellie May whom he called Dynamo; and many nieces and nephews.
Due to the pandemic, private arrangements are being handled by Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Rd., Erie, PA 16510. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery. A memorial celebration will be held at a future date.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at St. Vincent Hospital Covid Unit for their kind and compassionate care and the Brevillier Village staff, especially Amy and Shelby, who became his “second family” this past year.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 1022 Liberty St., Erie, PA 16502 or a charity of ones’ choice. Condolences can be sent at www.Burtonfuneralhomes.com.
