Edward P. Eller, 80, of Erie, died on his 59th wedding anniversary, Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at Sarah Reed Retirement Center. Ed was born on Jan. 16, 1933 in Erie, son of the late Edward Walter and Viola Maxim Eller. A lifelong resident of Erie, he graduated from Academy High School in 1950 and attended Gannon University and Penn State Behrend. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a Corporal during the Korean Conflict. Ed was an Insurance Agent for 50 years, working for Erie Insurance from 1950 to 1958, Metropolitan from 1958 to 1974, and Nationwide from 1974 until his retirement in 1996. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he served on Church Council, the Bahm Committee, and the Bereavement Committee, coached basketball for 30 years, played softball and basketball for the church teams for 25 years, and was named "Man of the Year" in 1990 in honor of his many years of commitment. Ed was a coach for Little League Baseball for many years, was a former member and past-president of the Board of Directors of the Lions Club of Erie, served on the Boards of Directors of The Boys Club of Erie, Time Old Newsies, Gannon Golden Knights Boosters and the YMCA where he was a lifelong member. He was also a member of the Zukor Club. Ed was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Louise Harvey Eller; a daughter, Lynn Schrimper of Erie; a son, Gary Eller and wife Brenda of Erie; a brother, David W. Eller of Ocoee, FL; two granddaughters, Allyson Minor and husband Alan and Michelle Schrimper, all of Erie, two grandsons, Michael Eller and wife Cassie and Eric Eller, all of Erie; two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Ella Minor of Erie; a sister-in-law, Joan Wheeler of Erie; and two nephews, Douglas Wheeler of New York and Gregory Eller and wife Amy of Montana.
Ed was preceded in death by his son-in-law, William Schrimper in August 2012
Friends may call Sunday 2 to 7 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle St. A service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach St., with the Rev. Roy P. Washill officiating. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery with U.S. Army Military Honors assisted by the Erie Crawford County Burial Detail. Memorials may be made to the Sight Center of NW PA, 2545 W. 26th St., Erie, PA 16506; or to Alzheimer's Assoc., 1128 State St. Suite 301, Erie, PA 16501; or a donation for new sporting equipment may be made in care of the funeral home for donation to various Erie youth sports organizations.
