Edna Mae Smith Nelson, age 90 of Erie, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Edna was born in Erie on December 21, 1922 to Leslie and Marie Shield Smith. She was a 1941 graduate of Strong Vincent high School. Edna and her husband owned Offerle Florist for over 30 years. She was an avid bowler and card player, playing in a card club for over 65 years with the same girls and also loved going to the casino. To her close friends, she was better known as “Gabby”. Edna was a life member of the VFW ladies auxiliary and volunteered for many years at Gifts for Kids and the Second Harvest Food Bank. Edna will be remembered most for her love and enthusiasm for life, sense of humor and being a proud and devoted grandmother.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald W. Nelson, brothers Robert, Gerald, Raymond and Richard Smith and her dear friend Lottie Brackett. She is survived by daughter Karen Donocoff and husband Berry, son Terry Nelson and wife Rose and brother Linden Smith. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Beth Burnside and husband Nat, David Lindsay, Gregory Flick and wife Gillian, Alicia Nelson and Kristen Nelson, three great grandchildren, Nicholas Burnside, Alexandra Burnside and Aria Flick.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 W 26th Street on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Second harvest Food Bank 1507 Grimm Drive, Erie, PA 16501 or to Aseracare Hospice 1600 Peninsula Drive, Erie, PA 16505.
