Earnest Hughes

July 30, 1925 — January 21, 2016

Earnest E. “Ernie” Hughes, age 90, of Millcreek, died on Thursday January 21, 2016 at UPMC Hamot. He was born in Birmingham AL, on July 30, 1925, a son of the late Melvin G and Katie Bell Butts.

A graduate of Ensley High School in Birmingham AL. He served in the US Army with the 91st Infantry Division in Italy during WWII. Mr. Hughes was a Foreman with the General Electric Company until his retirement in 1985; he was also a member of the Quarter Century Club. Ernie was a member of American Legion Post No. 773 and the Siebenbuerger Club.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Jane Kelly Hughes; a sister Lila Mae Case; and four brothers: Walter, Henry, Melvin, and Edward Hughes.

He is survived by a daughter, Katherine D. Thornton and her husband Wendell of Harborcreek; a son, Earnest “Gene” Hughes Jr. and his wife Theresa of San Antonio, TX; three grandsons, Jesse Thornton and his wife Destiny, Dustin Thornton, and Ryan Thornton, four great grandchildren, Miracle, Braeden, Ashton, and Tobias. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th St. (at Powell Ave.) on Sunday January 24th from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at 7 p.m. with Rev. Robert Lewis presiding. Private burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
