E.J. Mascaro, age 34, of Charleston SC passed away in South Carolina on Friday, January 20, 2017 as the result of a vehicle accident.
He was born in Erie on January 7, 1983, a son of David L. Mascaro, Jr. and Glenda Artman Mascaro.
E.J. was a 2002 Graduate of McDowell High School. He was a United States Army Veteran, serving two and a half tours in Iraq, ultimately earning a Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Presidential Citation. E.J. was a true Patriot and loved this Great Nation

Firefighter E.J. Mascaro started his fire service career at Lake Shore Fire Department in the late 1990’s. He joined West Lake Fire Department in 2002, serving in the ranks as a Firefighter and Lieutenant. E. J. was currently serving West Lake as an Allied Firefighter dedicating his time to the Millcreek Community when home on vacation.
Firefighter Mascaro moved to Charleston, SC to pursue his dream as a career firefighter with the Charleston, SC Fire Department. EJ then became a firefighter for the City of North Charleston, SC Fire Department serving as Assistant Engineer.
E.J. has served the firefighting community throughout the nation as an instructor with On Scene Training, teaching in many cities and states and mentoring countless firefighters.
E.J. is loved and will be missed by many, especially West Lake Fire Department, the other Millcreek Township Fire Departments, the North Charleston Fire Department and the many other departments that he touched. There was never a time that E.J. didn’t have a smile on his face, especially when he had the opportunity to teach at his home department with his brothers and sisters.
In addition to his parents he is survived by a brother, Richard Mascaro and his wife Amber of Pittsburgh, a sister, Sarah Mascaro of Erie, his aunt and uncle, Sandy and Terry Mascaro, his uncle, Ric Mascaro, and a close family friend, Stephanie Brown.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jude’s Church, 2801 West 6th Street, on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
