Dr. David C. McChesney DDS, 85, of Waterford, PA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on April 12, 2024.
David was born in Erie, PA, on April 26, 1938, to the late Dr. Robert Clinton and Mary (Cheeseman) McChesney.
As a youngster, David was helpful, curious, and adventurous. He would typically be found with his big brother and best friend, Bob McChesney, who proceeded him in death.
After graduating from McDowell in 1958, David completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Allegheny College in 1960. In his two years as an Allegheny Gator, David became an accomplished wrestler, cheerleader, and gymnast. He was active on student council, as well as a member of Phi Delta Theta.
Over the next four years, David earned his Dental Degree at The University of Michigan in 1964. His devotion to his cherished Wolverines never waivered. Always a proud Trojan and Gator, David’s heart rang true for "the Maize and the Blue." Now a bittersweet memory, he cheered his alma mater on to the 2024 National Championship. GO BLUE!
David joined the U.S. Navy as a Captain for 2 years, deployed to (former) Saigon, Vietnam in October 1964 until October 1965.While there, he used his medical training and any materials available to create restorative facial prosthetics for victims of military artillery. His selflessness was recognized when he was awarded The South Vietnamese Armed Forces Metal of Honor First Class. After his deployment, he completed his Navy career in San Diego, California, before returning home, to Erie, where he joined the Dental Practice of Dr. Barton, and later, Dr. Hirsch, in the Commerce Building, eventually starting his own Private Practice on Peach Street.
David also began a 13 year career as an instructor at the Peek 'N Peak Ski School, where he met his future wife, Susan Garvey-McChesney, eventually marrying in 1977. Together, they had 3 children; John McChesney, of Erie, Katie (Chris) Gallagher, of Waterford, and Kyle (Evan) McChesney, of Pensacola, FL. He was a devoted father who loved his children deeply, but that paled in comparison to the adoration he had for his 5 grandchildren; Gracie, Connor, Claire, Owyn, and Bodhi Rush, all by whom he is survived.
David's charm, wit, humor, and insight made him an incredible man, while his kind heart, and thoughtfulness made him a truly remarkable human being. He will be remembered dearly by all who were lucky enough know and love him.
