June 26, 1940 — August 31, 2017

Douglas John Fleming, age 77, of Erie, passed on Thursday, August 31, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle against lung cancer.  He was born June 26, 1940, in Erie, son of the late Kenneth H. Fleming and Margaret Rita Glennon Fleming.

Doug was a graduate of Academy High School, Class of ‘58.  He then joined the United States Marine Corps.  He served with the Second Marine Air Wing and the Third Marine Division Bands.  He then began an apprenticeship at Gustafson Optical Company.  He joined Bausch & Lomb as a salesman for ophthalmic products.  He also worked at Erie General Electric Company as their Optician and Laboratory Assistant.

Besides his parents, a sister, Jeanne Fairgraves Weber and sister-in-law Jean Owen Fleming preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife Judith Marie Henriksen Fleming, whom he married September 14, 1963, and a brother, Kenneth E. Fleming of Erie.  Five children, all of Erie: Douglas (Carla Kocher), Marianne Smith, Edward, James (Valerie Szymecki), and Sarah Chermack (Brent).  Twelve grandchildren: Jacob and Megan Fleming; Amanda, Zachary, Joseph, and Katelyn Smith; James, Jessica, and Faith Fleming; Abigail, Joshua, and Tyler Chermack.  He is also survived by brother/sister-in-laws Dan and Jean Wlodarcyzk, John and Janice Lindenberger, and many nieces and nephews.  Especially helpful during his illness was his beautiful niece, Kim Wilkosz.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and very active in the Big Giveaway program there.  He loved Cursillo and everything it represented, participating in Cursillo #109.  He also loved drag racing and watching a good football or Cleveland Indians baseball game.  The family would especially like to thank Laura and Paula from Regional Home & Health Hospice for their loving care.  He will be especially missed by his three dogs, Lady, Bella, and Shadow.

Friends are invited to call at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 816 W.26th St. on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at which time a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Burial will be private.
