Dorothy Hutzelman

December 16, 1915 — March 25, 2018

Dorothy Mae Hutzelman, 102, of Fairview, passed away on Sunday morning March 25, 2018 at Manchester Commons.

      She was born on December 16, 1915 in St. Bernard, Ohio, a daughter of Audrey H. and Alice (McKinsey) Abraham.  Dorothy graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Physical Education.  While there she met her future husband, Howard E. Hutzelman, whom she married on September 2, 1939 at the Madisonville Baptist Church in Cincinnati.  They were married for 52 years, until Howard's death in 1991.  They raised a family of 3 children, with 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchldren.

     Moving with Howard's employment, they lived in Wilmington, Delaware; Richmond, Virginia; Morgantown, West Virginia; Bridgeport, Connecticut; Wilmington again; Howard's home town of Dayton, Ohio; and Corry, Pennsylvania.  When Howard started his own business, they moved to Erie, and later to Fairview.

     After moving to Erie, Dorothy worked at the Erie YWCA, serving as Director of Health, Physical Education and Recreation until she left to help with Howard's new business, Flex-Y-Plan Industries, Inc.  She later served on the board of the YWCA.  After Howard's death she served as chair of the board of Flex-Y-Plan Industries, Inc., until she resigned in favor of the next generation.

     After retirement Dorothy and Howard spent the winters in Palm Coast, Florida and continued their life-long love of travel.  Dorothy was a member of Wayside Presbyterian for more than 50 years.  Over the years she enjoyed swimming, golf, playing bridge, ice skating and amazing sewing skills. She was active in volunteer activities at her church, as well as a member of Naomi Circle

     She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard, sister Alberta Saunders, and brother Herbert Abraham.

     She is survived by her sister Elnora Clark, 104, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and by her children Stephen H. Hutzelman (Margaret), Thomas H. Hutzelman (Barbara), and Becky J. Worthington (Donald), all of Erie; grandchildren Margaret McGuire (Timothy) of Beaver Falls and their son Quarrie; Maureen Severance of Erie and her son Justice; Melannie Dino (Thorick) of Ashburn, Virginia and their children Isabelle and Theodore; Stephen H. Hutzelman, Jr (Chivone) of Pittsburgh; Donald Hutzelman of Centreville, Virginia; Jeffrey Hutzelman of Pittsburgh; Brian Hutzelman (Kim) of Erie, and their children Max and Hannah; Kristin Worthington of Warrenton, Virginia and her children Greenley and Raegan Stobo; and Rev. Quincy Worthington (Beverly) of Munster, Indiana, and their children Isaac and Olivia Worthington, and Samantha and Andrew O'Donnell.

     Friends may call Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 W. 26th St. (at Powell Ave.) on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and on Wednesday at Wayside Presbyterian Church, 1208 Asbury Rd, Erie, PA 16505  from 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am with Rev. Dr. James Bernhardt officiating.  Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Wayside Presbyterian Church or to a charity of one's choice.
