Doris G. Allen, 84, of Erie, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 13, 2024.
Born in May of 1940 in Kissinger Mills, Pennsylvania, Doris was the daughter of Claire and Clara Stockdill. She lived in Erie for most of her life.
In 1961, Doris married Robert J. Allen. Robert was drafted in 1962 and the newlyweds moved around the US during Roberts military service with the US Army until his discharged in 1964 and afterwards returned to Erie.
Starting in 1965, Doris dedicated her time to being a wonderful mom. In 1975, following her passion of working with children, she found a job with the Millcreek Township School District. During her 27-year career in public secondary education, she enjoyed various roles including librarian, AV Equipment mgr., and finally retired as administrative assistant to the high school guidance counselor’s office.
Her church memberships in Erie included Christ, Asbury and Lakewood - United Methodist Church and she actively served in various rolls and leadership positions within the Western PA Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was especially fond of the fellowship at Wesley Woods Church Camp.
Doris’s mission in retirement was to be a friend and help people enjoy the great outdoors. “I am an OUTSIDE person and feel very close to God when I’m doing something outside in God’s Beautiful World.” As a lifelong member of the Erie Outing Club, Doris enjoyed 20 plus years of retirement filled with games, camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, playing the piano, participating in the church bell choir and volunteering, thoroughly achieving her goal of positively impacting the lives of many people. She remained active all her life, just recently pedaling 13.5 miles around the Presque Isle State Park.
Doris and Robert enjoyed 61 years of marriage until Robert preceded her in death in 2022. Also preceding her were her parents and two sisters Dorothy and Lois.
She is survived by her son Barry, daughter-in-law Renee of Siler City, NC and granddaughter Samantha.
A private ceremony will be conducted by the family. They ask that you remember her sweet personality, positive outlook on life and her spontaneously singing the song “you can smile” to almost everyone she met.
