Doretha Hunter

November 2, 1967 — July 31, 2021

Doretha Faye Hunter, 53, transitioned into eternal life on Saturday, July 31, 2021 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on Thursday, November 2, 1967 to her mother and father, Dorothy F. Clayton Hunter and Dennis L. Hunter.

A lifetime resident of Erie, she graduated from Tech Memorial High School in 1986. Doretha was affectionately called “Rita” or “The Foxx” or “Mema” by her grandchildren. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was a faithful member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, where she served actively as the Vice President of the Nurses Guild, sang in Buds of Promise Choir, Young Adult Choir, and The Gospel Chorus, she also served as the director of the youth usher board.

Rita provided a safe haven for many family, friends and neighbors children through her Home Daycare Services. Rita loved kids and enjoyed teaching and nurturing them early in life. Her true passion in life was taking care of others in their time of need. She had the heart and strength to be a caregiver whenever someone needed one. She loved to cook for her friends and family, some of her well-known dishes included “red beans and rice”, baked “macaroni and cheese” a well-dressed “ham” and “turkey’. Her love for music was literally contagious and she passed that love down to her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Rita enjoyed going to see the local live band performances especially her favorite band “The Groove”. You could always catch her dancing, snapping her fingers and singing at any given moment.

She was a member of many social clubs including The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary of the Post 700, the Siebenbuerger Club, and the Sacred Heart Usher’s Club. Rita loved spending time with her family and friends and especially enjoyed the time she spent with her three beautiful grandchildren. Her presence and love will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Charles and Irene Gant Clayton, paternal grandparents Rev. Ambus and Josephine Foster Hunter, many aunts and uncles and her Godson, Scott Williams.

Rita leaves to cherish her memory her parents, three children, one daughter, Shakara Hunter, two sons, Da’Ronn Hunter, and Joshua Holman, one sister, Denise (Walter) Hunter-Riley, four brothers, Darrell (Ana) Hunter, Pastor Duane (Kicole) Hunter, Dale Hunter all of Erie and Dwight (Vickie) Hunter of Waldorf, MD, three grandchildren, Deonte’ Deboe-Holman, Berlynn Holman and Ariya Hunter all of Erie, Goddaughters, Paige Williams and Shaneakwa Sims-Carder, foster sisters and closest friends, Linda Roberts, Erika Williams, Gloria Lyles, Carol Summerville and Joyce Taylor, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, numerous friends, as well as her loving church family.
