Donald E.Whiteman, age 94, of Girard, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Fairview Manor.
He was born July 19, 1919 in Endeavor, Forest County, Hickory Township, the son of the late Ralph and Agnes Rudolph Whiteman.
He served in the U.S Army during WW II in the 8th Infantry Division. He was a cannoneer and fuse setter and received four bronze stars for his service.
Don started his work career at several local brick yards. He then worked as a self -employed dairy farmer in Fairview Township and for many years at Great Lakes Frozen Foods in Lake City. Donald was a “tinkerer”, he could fix anything, including antique clocks, antique dolls and any type of electronics. He will be remembered more recently as the guy that rode around Girard on his tricycle collecting aluminum cans.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William James Whiteman in 1975; three sisters: Cecil VanCise, Edith Yucha and Edna Newark.
He is survived by his daughter Ruth Moss and her husband James of Erie; three sisters: Donna Swanson of New York; Jean Lauger of Pittsfield; and Lois Wike of East Hickory; four grandchildren: Jody Smith and her husband Rodney; James B. Moss; and his wife Kim; Erin Moss; and Crystal Nye all of Erie; five great grandchildren: Heather, Kevin, Miranda, Corey, and Tim; as well as several great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main Street East, in Girard on Monday from 2-4 and 6 pm until the time of the service at 8pm. Burial will be private in Erie County Memorial Gardens.
