Donald Lamont Smith, age 87, of Erie, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at his residence.
He was born in Warren, PA on June 13, 1928, a son of the late John and Pearl Smith.
Donald was a 1947 graduate of Youngsville High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Penn State University in 1958. Donald worked at General Electric as a parts order technician retiring in 1986 after 21 years of service.
He was a member of Wayside Presbyterian Church. He was known for his sense of humor and his sayings, such as “Are you working hard or hardly working?” Donald was very kindhearted and loving. He was a great family man who loved his family very much. He also enjoyed traveling, was a race car enthusiast and loved reading.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Eric Russell Smith in 1985, three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, who he married on June 26, 1954, Gladys Crawford Smith; four children, Jeffrey Alan Smith (Debbie), Douglas Smith (Treza), both of Erie, Wendy Calhoun (Gary) of Medina, OH and Laurie Jo Hasbrouck, of Erie and ten grandchildren, Cara Smith, Stephanie Bradley (Jeremy), Jamie Smith, Aubrie Smith, Kaileigh Scott (Merle), Katelyn Calhoun, Christian Calhoun, Caroline Calhoun, Cory DiLoreto and Raeanne Hasbrouck. Two great-grandchildren, a brother and sister further survive.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, (at Powell Avenue,) on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend a service at Wayside Presbyterian Church, 1208 Asbury Road, on Monday at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Keith Sundberg and James Bernhardt officiating.
Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
