Donald Smith

Donald Robert “Bob” Smith age 78, of Millcreek passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 18, 2016 at his residence.

He was born in Erie on September 13, 1938 a son of the late Donald F. and Mary Grugin Smith.

Donald graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School and went on to serve in the United States Coast Guard.

Along with his brother, Donald owned and operated Don Smith Hardware for many years.

Donald was a member of the Erie Yacht Club and the Erie Runners Club. He enjoyed running and on his 40th birthday ran 40 miles and also ran in the Boston Marathon. He also enjoyed camping, traveling and walking at Asbury Woods and Presque Isle.

He is survived by two sons, Tom Smith and his wife Darcy and David A. Smith all of Erie; three grandchildren, Joel, Brooke and Morgan Smith; a brother, John M. Smith and his wife Gretchen of Erie; a sister, Kathleen A. Feilder of SC, his former: wife, Patricia Knight and a daughter in law, Peggy A. Schnieder. He is further survived by a niece and nephew.

Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 W. 26th Street (at Powell Ave) on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service at 7:00 p.m. with Fr. Michael DeMartinis officiating.
