David Schabacker, Jr.

        David Martin Schabacker, Jr., passed away January 5th at Hamot Hospital after a brief illness.  David was the son of the late David Martin Schabacker Sr., and Donna Mae Weinheimer Schabacker.  David was born in Erie on October 24th, 1941 and was a life long resident of Erie.   He is survived by his son, David Martin Schabacker III, his wife Jacquelyn, grandaughter Devon, and grandson David Martin Schabacker IV of Washington, Michigan.  He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Schabacker Tozer (Rob) of Naples Florida and his brother, Scott Schabacker (Kathy) of San Diego, California.
     As a young boy, David was a very well known figure in Erie as the holder of many swimming titles locally and state wide, as well as two national records.  His swimming prowess put him on the national stage when he was featured in the October 18, 1954 issue of "Sports Illustrated".  His picture was highlighted in the "Pat on the Back" section.  The magazine lauded him for having broken the National AAU freestyle and backstroke records for his 12 and under age group. His swimming dominance continued through high school at Strong Vincent, where he continued to break records, as well as shine as a water polo player. His sister Nancy remembers looking up at the Strong Vincent record board for swimming and seeing David's name repeatedly displayed as a current record holder.  He was also tapped for track and field competition with his competitive nature and natural athletic ability.
     David received a full scholarship for his swimming abilities to Ohio State University. He ultimately graduated from Gannon University and worked as a stock broker, later buying properties in Jamestown N.Y. and Erie. In 2014 David was inducted into the Erie County Aquatic Hall of Fame. David will be remembered for his kind heart and sense of humor.

     A Memorial Service to honor the life of David will be held at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street, Erie, Pa. on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 3 p.m.
