David E. Nicewonger, age 87, formerly of Elk Valley Manor in Girard and the home he built at 3258 West 43rd St. in Erie, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at Pleasant Ridge Manor West. Born April 21, 1925, in Cherryhill Twp, Indiana County, PA, he was a son of the late E. E. Nicewonger and Edna Ober Nicewonger. David was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He had been employed at Erie Universal, Koehler Machine, Penn Brass and Copper and Bennett Mowers, and he retired from maintenance at Shriner's Hospital in Erie.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years Betty Vasbinder Nicewonger in 1995, a son, Joseph Carl Nicewonger in 1991, a granddaughter, Patt Jo Blattenberger; a great grandson, George E. Nicewonger and one brother and five sisters. He is survived by two sons: George Nicewonger and his wife Karen of Lake City and Robert Nicewonger and his wife Linda of Girard; six daughters: Patty Blattenberger and her husband George of Girard, Luella Kohler of Wattsburg, Rosanne Esper and her husband Roger of Erie, Peggy Keller and her husband Dan of Edinboro, Susan Steiner of Erie, and Betty Nicewonger of Avon Lake, OH. He is also survived by 21grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main Street East in Girard on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday in Burton's All Faiths Chapel. Burial will follow in Erie County Memorial Gardens.
