Cynthia Joy (Small) Niemela, died peacefully at the age of 83, on Monday, December 14, 2020 at Manchester Commons, in Erie, PA.
Cindy was born in Bloomfield, New Jersey on February 19, 1937 to the late Frank Gates Small and Pauline Brauner Small.
If you knew her, you would agree that she was a loving and devoted wife and mother who was characterized by her kind and generous spirit. She loved music (singing and playing the piano), dancing, cooking, laughing and telling stories, but more than anything she loved people. Cindy took time to talk to people and really listen, she had a unique ability to turn strangers into friends. For the last 8 years, she lived and struggled with the effects of dementia and was treated for a previously undiagnosed bi-polar disorder. True to her spirit, she bore this well, loving those around her. Her smile, laugh and sense of humor were infectious. Cindy knew her Savior Jesus is risen and looked forward to joining him in heaven.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Frank Gates Small, Jr, and niece, Debbi Small-Mehan.
Cindy is survived by daughters, Lynne Rose, Diana Keesling, and Janet Figueroa and son, Jeff Niemela, along with their spouses as well as 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.
I am reminded of what Dickens wrote of one of his characters “She knew how to keep Christmas well and kept it year around.” We will miss you Mom, but look forward to our eternal reunion.
Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services, Inc. Downtown, 602 W. 10th St, Erie, PA 16502.
