Claude Gerald Groters II, 72, died on Friday, September 2, 2016, at his home in Erie. He was born on September 17, 1943, in Cranesville, PA, son of the late Rev. Claude Gerald Groters, Sr. and the late Rita Schimph Groters. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of Alliance College, Cambridge Springs, Pa., where he studied drafting and mechanical engineering. Mr. Groters owned and operated Groters Design Services for 30 years and did contracting work for NASA, Duracell, and Timpte, Inc. (designer and builder of farm truck bodies and trailers). His most notable accomplishments were designing children's' car seats, Redfield hunting scope lenses, NASA's lunar chair and its propulsion system, airplane oxygen masks, and the design of the only two machines operating in the production of Duracell Batteries. He retired in 1995. He enjoyed model railroading and drawing. As an accomplished artist, many of his pieces were on display at the Erie VA Medical Center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Ann Batten Groters, in 2009.
Survivors include a son, Claude Gerald Groters III of Erie; a sister, Juanita Brown (Elmer) of Canadohta Lake, PA; three grandchildren, Samuel Groters of Montana, and Shannon Groters and Stephanie Deckert both of Erie; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street, Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of a funeral service there at Noon. The Rev. Harry Johns III will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Billy Simpson Post 470. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
