Mother Clantha Jones, age 95, of Erie, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 10 2014.
She was born April 16, 1919, in Heidelberg, MS, daughter of the Late Horace and Mary Smith Jones.
She became a believer of Christ at an early age and joined the Jerusalem Baptist Church where she served until moving to Erie, PA in 1941.
She was instrumental in the establishment of the Second Baptist Church in 1947, where she faithfully served until moving her membership and becoming a charter member of the newly organized Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in 1959. She served as a choir director for the Inspirational Choir and the Gospel Chorus, a member of the Senior Missionary Society, Superintendent of the Sunday School, a regular participant at the Congress of Christian Education Baptist Convention USA, Inc., and on the Mother’s Board until her death.
She was employed at the United Youth Enterprise Laundromat through GECAC until it closed. She then worked at OEM Grimm Industries until she was 87 years of age.
She enjoyed vegetable gardening, fishing, cooking and attending Church services, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Prayer Meetings.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Jones Atkinson, Samantha Jones Nixon, and Roseana Jones Fowler.
She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Carla Worthen Johnson (Junius) of Erie, two sons, James Worthen(Monique) of Lancaster, CA, and Marvin Jones (Tracy) of Erie, PA, eight grandchildren, Benjamin, Donovin, and Kamryn, all of Erie, Pa, Stephan, (Texas) DeMaurie, and Dominic, of Lancaster, CA; Jay Jr, and Jasmine of Inglewood, CA. Two sisters, Christine Williams Tolbert of Erie, PA, and Deborah Jones Barnes of Cleveland, OH, two goddaughters, Marcia Hooks and Shirley Windham, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and Church family.
Friends may call at Antioch Baptist Church on Saturday from 11 am until the time of services at 1 pm with the Pastor Danny Stanton officiating and Pastor Floyd R. McClure eulogizing.
Burial will be in Erie Cemetery.
Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 602 West Tenth Street, Erie, PA 16502 is in charge of the arrangements.
