Cheryl Jean Adams Lucht
December 12, 1946 — March 31, 2024
Cheryl Jean Adams Lucht, formerly of Erie, PA, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on March 31, 2024, at UPMC West Shore in Mechanicsburg, PA, following a ten-year ordeal with scleroderma. Cheryl was born on December 12, 1946, in Missouri, and she moved to Erie as a child. Cheryl graduated from Academy High School in 1964 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Grove City College in 1968. It was at Academy High School that she met the love of her life, best friend, and future husband, Gary R. Lucht.
Cheryl and Gary married on July 27, 1968. That same year, she began teaching, and she taught in the City of Erie School District and later at Luther Memorial School. A published poet, Cheryl dedicated her professional life to teaching English and a love of reading, and she zealously opposed artistic censorship. After learning about protests over local concerts in the 1980s, she opined that no one has turned to a life of crime due to listening to the Beastie Boys or Ozzy Osbourne. Over the years, Cheryl’s primary love was spending time with her family and friends, and she enjoyed playing bunco and mahjong. Over her lifetime, she served and volunteered for several benevolent and charitable organizations. Further, Cheryl was an active member at Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church, and she enjoyed volunteering with her husband at the Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church Food Pantry.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, John F. Adams and Catherine Adams. Cheryl is survived by her husband of more than 55 years, Gary, and their three children: Jeffrey Lucht and wife Melanie of Murrysville, PA, and their son Ryan; Kirsten Jones and husband Michael Jones of Camp Hill, PA, and their three sons Maxwell, Anderson, and Jackson; Gregory Lucht and wife Nicole of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, and their three children, Ethan, Madelyn, and Addison. In addition to her immediate family, Cheryl is survived by her brother Ken Adams and wife Tammy of Kansas City, MO, sister-in-law Judy Lucht Decker of Fairview, PA, dear cousins, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Cheryl was loved by her family and by close friends who shared countless treasured memories and provided unwavering support throughout her life. The family would like to thank the compassionate and dedicated staff at UPMC West Shore for their care and kindness.
