Charles E. Liken, D.O., age 79, of Erie, died on Friday, February 19, 2016 at his residence. He was born on July 21, 1936 in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Russell B. and Alberta Muehlbronner Liken.
Dr. Liken graduated from Oil City High School and Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. He worked in Erie as a Pharmacist for Eckerd Drug Store for several years before attending Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences where he received his Osteopathic Medical Degree. He returned to Erie and worked in his own family medical practice for 41 years. He was also in the Pennsylvania National Guard for over 35 years. Attaining the Rank of Colonel. Upon his retirement he was promoted to the Rank of Brigadier General, Retired. He loved to fly and was certified helicopter pilot and flight surgeon.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant for 25 years, POMA, Blue Lodge F.& A.M., Scottish Rite Valley of Erie, Zem Zem Temple Shrine and was a life member of Erie Maennerchor Club. He was an avid runner, having completed 4 marathons and logged over 10,000 miles with the Erie Runners Club. Additionally, Charlie loves music, animals, and was an avid reader. He was best known for his kind and generous heart and the great compassion which he extended to his patients.
Charles is survived by his wife of 24 years, Linda Marsden Liken; his children: Atty. Charles E. Liken of Aspen, CO, Atty. Lisa (Bill) Civitella of W. Palm Beach, FL, and Mary L. Liken of Aspen, CO; his step children: John R. (Maggie) Marsden Jr. of Erie, Michael E. Marsden of Erie, Kelly L. (Allen) Marsden of London, England, and Wendy S. (Jeffrey) Marsden of Erie; and 12 grandchildren: Billy, Kevin, and Catherine Civitella, Jessica, Samantha, Ryan, Sean Patrick, and Rachel Marsden, Sullivan and Collin Johnson, and Natalie and Jacob Sinsheimer. He is further survived by his sister Patricia (Joseph) Donofry of Bristol, IN, one niece, one nephew and his first wife Lina Wills Liken of FL.
Friends may call on the family on Tuesday at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 W. 26th St. (at Powell Ave.) from 2-4pm and 6-8pm and attend the funeral service on Wednesday February 24, at the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, at 11am with Pastor Timm High officiating, with full military honors.
