Charles "Joe" Crockett, age 92, of Erie, passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018 at Villa St. Joseph, in Garfield Heights, OH. He was born in Houston MS on September 27, 1925, a son of the late Hugh and Nettie Buchanan Crockett.
Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, with tours in France and the Philippines. After the war he settled in Erie and worked at General Electric until his retirement in 1986. Charles served as both a Deacon and an Usher at Shiloh Baptist Church for many years; he also volunteered there with the food pantry and seniors group, often driving members to church and appointments.
Charles played baseball for the Erie Pontiacs. He was an avid bowler and achieved two perfect 300 games. Charles enjoyed watching baseball and golf, loved vegetable gardening, and was known to make his own brandy.
In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Christine Wyatt Crockett; four sisters, Geneva Copeland, Hughnette Crockett, Lois Lyles and Bonnie Atkinson and his brother, Eddie Dean Crockett.
He is survived by his son, Gary Crockett, Chester, WV; daughters, Stephanie O'Rourke and her
husband Thomas, of Shaker Heights, OH, and Stacey Gall, of Bristol, PA; three grandchildren, Gary Crockett Jr, Stephen Crockett (Cassandra) and Taylor O'Rourke; great-grandson, Jacob Crockett; sisters, Doris Neal, of MS and Barbara Hinton, of AZ; brother, Ellis Crockett, of MS and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Shiloh Baptist Church, 901 East 5th St., Erie on Saturday, June 23 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Home Going Celebration with Rev. Anthony Harris presiding. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery.
Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 602 W. 10th St., Erie.
