Catharine Furst

September 6, 1927 — January 30, 2017

Catharine L. Furst, age 89, of Millcreek, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2017 at UPMC Hamot.

She was born in Verona, PA on September 6, 1927, the daughter of the late Dr. Raymond and Mary K. McCreight Stumpf.

She graduated from Braddock High School and was employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company retiring after many years of service.

For many years Catharine was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was also a Sunday School Teacher and belonged to the Sarah Circle. Recently she was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir. Catharine was also a Board Member of Family Support Services and AMIECO (Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Erie County). She also was a member of the Presque Isle Garden Club.

Catharine was an avid reader, and enjoyed learning her whole life. She was always educating herself, often taking classes to learn more about subjects of interest to her. She enjoyed travel and planning the trip was a large part of her enjoyment.

She was a loving mother and friend to her daughter and two sons and a special friend to many.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Furst; a son Raymond G. Furst who passed away on January 16, 2017 and three brothers: Richard, Raymond and Robert Stumpf.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Tyler and her husband Butch; a son, David Furst and his wife Erminie, all of Erie; three grandchildren, Gina and Derek Furst of Erie and Kent Furst of Cleveland, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 W. 26th Street (at Powell Ave) on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon and are invited to attend services on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 3968 Hershey Road Erie, PA 16506 with Pastor Ron Freebourn officiating.

Burial will be private, at the convenience of the family.
