Carrie Dee (Red) Stokes, age 93, of Erie, transitioned from labor to reward on November 12, 2016 at Golden Living Western Reserve.
She was born in Noxubee County, MS on September 25, 1923, the daughter of the late Eddie Lee and Mattie E. Washington Bankhead.
Carrie was the kitchen supervisor for the Salvation Army for several years, prior to retiring, after five years, from Tanner Manufacturing.
She was a member of the First Good Samaritan Church, where she served on the Pastor Aid Committee, the Trustee Board and the Senior Choir. She headed several fund raising committees for the church. Carrie was also a member of the Martin Luther King Ladies Auxiliary. In Jackson, TN, she was a member of Walnut Grove Church, where she served on the Ushers Board and the Senior Choir.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Douglas Stokes, a son Decatur Bankhead, five brothers, James, Walter, Eugene, Edward and Ransom Bankhead, three sisters, Louise Bankhead Winston, Emma Jane Bankhead Ingram and Pearlie Bankhead Cox as well as step-daughters, Jeanette Johnson-Gaines and Margaret Clark.
Carrie leaves to cherish in memory, her daughter, Mary Arrington, two brothers, John and, two sisters, Annie Bell Bankhead Spence and Geniver Herrell. Carrie is further survived by eleven grandchildren, Lester Johnson of Baltimore, MD, Kevin Johnson of Farrell, PA, Bryan Clark of North East, PA, Deacon Beary Clark of Erie, PA, Peggy Stribling of Flint, MI, Reverend Dwight Johnson of Erie, PA, Oscar Johnson of Erie, PA, Alvin (Lukata) Clark of Jackson, MS, Odester Clark of Erie, PA, Linda Clark of Cleveland, OH, Tina Johnson of Erie, PA, special friend, Mother Pecola Tate and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Friends may call at the First Good Samaritan Church, 3209 Pennsylvania Avenue, Erie, PA 16504 on Monday, November 20, 2016 at 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Amos Goodwine, Jr. presiding. Arrangements are handled by Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 602 West 10th Street. Memorials may be made to the Youth Department of the First Good Samaritan Church, 3209 Pennsylvania Avenue, Erie, PA 16504.
