The Life of CARLA BERNEICE HUGHES
Carla B Hughes went home to be with the Lord on May 17,2021. She was born in Erie on February 20,1971 to her late parents, Joe Louis and Marcia Ann Hughes. She graduated from Technical Memorial High School in 1989, where she was a member of the Track and Field team, the Academic Honor Society, the Athletic Honor Society, and was a student of the School for Performing and Visual Arts; formerly known as the SPAVA program. She would then go on to Point Park College where she would receive her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in dance. She would later attend Ohio State University and receive a Master of Education.
She was a member of Kuntu Repertoire Theatre which was the first African American Theatre Troupe in the world
She taught dance at the Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy through her entire seventeen-year career with the Erie School District. She was a well-known Erie Playhouse performer and a member of the Playhouse’s Board of Directors. Throughout the years, she remained active in the Erie community. She worked with Life Thru Music, created a segment called Life Thru Dance, and was also involved with Erie Arts and Culture. She was currently serving as President of The Erie Dance Consortium.
In addition to dance and music, Carla enjoyed spending time with her family and close friends. She was an active member of Second Baptist Church where she was a member of the Praise Team, choir, and would often help with the youth programs when asked. She was also a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and enjoyed many activities with her Sorors.
She is survived by her son; Chase Hughes-Williams, her sister Marlo Newell (Jimmie) of Atlanta Ga, her brother Joe L Hughes Jr (Amber) of Erie Pa. She also leaves behind six nephews, eight nieces, one Goddaughter (Kelly Parthenakis), two God Sisters; Jenny Gamble and Latonya Thigpen, two best friends; Stacy Rivers and Kim Overton, an Uncle; Lynn Johnson (Jane) whom she was extremely close to, and many Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and cherished friends.
Friends may call at Second Baptist Church, 757 East 26th Street, on Tuesday, May 25 from 5 PM until 8 PM and Wednesday, May 26th from 10 AM until the time of service at 12 PM with Pastor Lamont Higginbottom presiding and will be live streamed for public viewing at https://www.facebook.com/Second-Baptist-Church-381180425564665/. Burial will follow in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. Downtown, 602 W. 10th St., Erie.
