Carl L. Swanson of Millcreek, passed away on April 22, 2017. He was 101 years old.
He was born, in Jamestown, NY, on June 19, 1915 to the late John and Charlotte Lenna Swanson. Mr. Swanson graduated from Jamestown High School and served in the US Army Corps of Engineers during WWII. He was involved in battles and campaigns led by General George S. Patton in the Rhineland, Ardennes, central Europe and northern France. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, as well as the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Swanson supervised a squad of combat engineers in construction and repair of roads and bridges, mine laying, mine removal, building of pontoon bridges, and transportation of information across them.
Mr. Swanson began his career as a printer with his hometown newspaper, the Jamestown Evening Journal. He then worked for 28 years with the Erie Times-News. He received a 40 year service pin from The International Typographical Union.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Phyllis Olson Swanson, and a brother, Ernest Swanson. He is survived by two daughters, Wendy Swanson of Falls Church, Virginia, and Diane Ropelewski (John) of Millcreek. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Pamela and Julie Ropelewski of Millcreek, and Philip Ropelewski of Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
No calling hours will be observed, and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
