Carl Nels Sandberg of Fairview passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025 at Forestview Skilled Nursing Center. Nels was born in Youngstown, Ohio on April 19, 1945 to Carl and Margaret (Hallston) Sandberg. He graduated from Youngstown State University with a degree in mechanical engineering, was hired by General Electric, and remained working there until his retirement.
In 1969, he married Lois Lehner of Youngstown, and they moved to Erie. He traveled internationally for GE, representing off highway equipment and locomotives. After retirement, Nels and Lois traveled to many countries. He was a member of the General Electric Exempt Retirees (GEER) and especially enjoyed the group’s mystery trips. Along with Lois, he managed the boarding house of the Ecumenical Community of Chautauqua for six years during the summer. He served on the Erie United Methodist Alliance (EUMA) board for several years.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed working (or playing) on his model train layout in the basement and going to train shows, always buying something new. If Lois couldn’t find him, he would be in the basement enjoying the trains. He had a great time teaching his grandchildren all about the trains and how to run them.
Nels was a member of Kingsley United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, served as treasurer, and helped with many repairs and projects. A great joy in his life was attending and supporting the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, the Erie Playhouse, and EUMA.
Nels is survived by his wife Lois, his children: Jason (Erica), Eric (Gina), and Sharon (Erich Scribner), his grandchildren: Bella, Emma, Adelyn, Josefina, Magdalena, and Harrison, his brother Dennis (Nancy) of Nashville, TN, brother-In-Law Lloyd Murray of Youngstown, OH, his nieces and nephews, several cousins and their families, and many friends.
Friends may call at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, West Ridge 3801 West 26th Street on Friday, February 28th from 2-7pm. A funeral service will be held at Kingsley United Methodist Church on March 1 at 11am. Friends may also call before the service at the church at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, the Erie Playhouse, or the Erie United Methodist Alliance (EUMA).
