Carl “Don” Hanes, age 83 passed away on Monday March 17, 2025 at the Erie VA Medical Center.
He was born in Jamestown, NY on January 19, 1942, to the late Carl David and Fern E. Silbaugh Hanes.
Don graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1960. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Penn State in 1964; a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Gannon University in 1975 and a Master’s in Business Administration from Gannon University in 1982.
He served as a Staff Sgt. with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict and was named by his squadron “Airman of the Month” for February 1969.
He was a telephone operator for Verizon for many years; served as Controller for Union City Chair for 5 years; a substitute teacher in the Erie, Millcreek and Fairview School Districts for 10 years and worked for H&R Block.
Don was a member of First Alliance Church and formerly belonged to Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit where he was treasurer for 16 years; taught Sunday school; was a member of their Vestry; instructed their Evangelism Explosion & Alpha courses; and was the organizer of Christian Financial Concepts.
He attended Episcopal Cursillo No. 25 in 1981.
Don was a lifelong member of Penn State Alumni Association and a former member of National Association of Accountants and Millcreek Youth Athletic Association where he served as Treasurer for 2 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Michelle Bomboy; sisters, Maxine Seeley and Shirley Lundstrom and brother, James Hanes.
Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda M. Jarrett Hanes and a son, Robert S. Hanes (Michele) of Erie. He’s further survived by 2 granddaughters, Lindsey and Ashley Bomboy and a son-in-law, Bryon Bomboy, all of Erie; as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Friends may call at First Alliance Church of Erie, 2939 Zimmerly rd., Erie, PA 16506 on Friday March 21 from 10:00 AM until time of funeral service at 1:00 PM with Rev. Scott Shuffield officiating.
Burial to follow at Erie County Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
Memorials may be made to the First Alliance Church of Erie.
