C. Richard Overberg, 73, died Mon., Feb. 6, 2012 at his residence in Erie. He was born Nov. 4, 1938 in Jamestown, NY, son of the late Joseph C. and Frieda Tulen Overberg.
A 1956 graduate of Southwestern Central High School, Jamestown, NY, he earned an accounting degree from Jamestown Community College and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was originally involved in appliance sales, co-owning and operating the Winter Company on State St. and later joining the Chaffee Appliance Store. Making a career change, he went to work as a financial advisor for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, formerly Lutheran Brotherhood. After retiring from Thrivent, he operated C. Richard Overberg Insurance until the time of his death.
Mr. Overberg was a member of Luther Memorial Church where he was treasurer for many years, served on church council and was one of the founders of Luther Memorial Learning Center and a member of their board of directors. He was a former member of the First Lutheran Church, Jamestown, NY.
He was very involved in Vasa Order of America where he served as Grand Treasurer from 2002 to 2010 and was Past-Master of PA District No. 9. He was a 28-year member of SVEA Lodge No. 296 where he was past-chairman and held numerous other positions. He was also a member of the Ingjald Lodge No. 65 Independent Order of Vikings, the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, Erie Shrine, Perry-Keystone Lodge No. 392 F.& A.M., Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite - Valley of Erie, Erepa Grotto, Saga Club, Jerusalem Council No. 33 R.&S.M., and the Zukor and Maennerchor Clubs.
He enjoyed model railroading and was a train rider enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Yernberg Overberg; daughter, Beth Keller and husband Jerry of Erie; son, Captain John Overberg, U.S. Army; sister, Vera Smith of Frewsburg, NY; grandchildren, Anna and Tyler Keller of Erie; his cat, Sid; and dog, Gunnar.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Goulding.
Friends may call Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle St. A service will be held at Luther Memorial Church, 225 W. 10th St., Friday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. William Coleman officiating. Military honors conducted by VFW Billy Simpson Post 470 will follow. Private inurnment will be at Luther Memorial Church Columbarium. Perry Keystone Lodge No. 392 F. & A.M. will conduct Masonic services at the funeral home Thursday at 7 p.m.
