Betty Jane West, 88, of Erie, PA, passed away Thursday, March 6th, 2014, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family, following a brief illness. She was born on March 19th, 1925, daughter of the late Robert and Ethel Adams.
She attended Strong Vincent High School and shortly after, married her first husband, Clinton “Pete” Parker, who was killed in action during WWII. Betty continued to work a variety of jobs, and provide for her family. She then married her late husband, Carl Schrader, and often spoke of entertaining family and friends with one of the first televisions in Erie!
Later in her life, Betty settled in Warren, PA with her husband Floyd West, whom she was married to for over 30 years until his passing. Here, she cherished her time spent as a Librarian with the Warren County Library. Betty shared her love of reading with many. During her years in Warren, Betty enjoyed hiking, nature and gardening. Many close friends, and family have wonderful memories of moments shared together at Chapman Dam!
Community Service was important to Betty as she volunteered her time repairing toys that were then gifted to disadvantaged children with Toys for Tots and also volunteering with The Second Harvest Food Bank. With all of her interest, Betty’s greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Marian Inscho.
Betty is survived by her devoted daughter Barbara Szelinski and her son-in-law, Tom of Mill Village, PA. She is also survived by her only son, Carl Schrader of Lawrence Park, PA; her sister Alberta Adams; 6 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Betty’s generous spirit and sharp wit will be greatly missed!
Burton Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 602 West 10th Street will be handling arrangements for the family. A memorial and celebration of Betty’s life will be private, at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be made to The Regional Home Health and Hospice, 13675 Route 6, Corry, PA 16407.
