Bertha Lee (Henderson) Phillips, 97, of 215 East 24th Street, Erie, Pa., died peacefully at her daughters home in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, surrounded by family. She was born in Greenwood, Miss., on August 9, 1925, to the late Willie Cornell and Rose Henderson.
In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband Elijah Jack Phillips, siblings Jimmy Lee King, and Ernest King, and a great-granddaughter, Ileana Williams
Bertha was a resident of Erie since 1955. She retired from The Booker T. Washington Center after over 30 years of service. Bertha was a founding member of Morning Star Baptist Church where she served most graciously on the Usher Board, Senior Citizen groups, and Kitchen staff.
Bertha had a true love for God, Family and Gardening. When Bertha was able she enjoyed attending the senior citizen programs at church, playing BINGO at home with her grandchildren and cruising around Goodwill, Ollies and Walmart.
Bertha leaves to cherish her memory her only child, daughter Bertha Phillips-Johnson and son-in-law Jerrad Shawn Johnson, Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren Lakesia Moffett (Randy), Charlotte, N.C., Elijah Thomas, Charlotte, N.C., Nyeala Moffett (Dominique), Charlotte, N.C., Deshara Johnson, Orlando, Fla., nine great-grandchildren, Alicia Thomas, Jerrad Johnson, Skyyla Moffett, Kaylee Moffett, Emery Moffett, Mason King, Kalyah Ordonez, Ryleigh Moffett, Kyleigh Moffett. Bertha held a warm place in her heart for many, especially her dear niece Shirley Clark (Beary) who was more like a daughter to her, a large host of nieces, nephews, friends, her beloved cats “Marvin and Roxi,” and her Morning Star Baptist Church family.
Friends are invited to call on the family at Morning Star Baptist Church, the honorable Reverend Duane F. Hunter, Pastor, 323 E. 23rd St., Erie, Pa. Saturday, August 27th, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Erie County Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Downtown, 602 W. 10th St.
