Barney Radov

Barney R. Radov, age 89 of Sarasota, FL and Erie, died August 8, 2013 in Florida as the result of an auto accident. He was born October 6, 1923 in Erie, the son of the late Morris P. and Luba Levine Radov.

Barney attended Washington and Lee University on a tennis scholarship and graduated from Allegheny College where he was on the basketball team. He served in the Intelligence Unit of the Army Air Force during World War II.

Barney was president of Independent Iron and Metal Corporation. Mr. Radov was a member and president of Congregation B’rith Sholom, in Erie, Pa and president of its brotherhood. He was a member of Temple Anshe Hesed, also in Erie, PA, and was the founding president of the Committee for Better Schools. He served as the National Chairman of Small Cities of the National Jewish Federation, and as the president of the Jewish Community Council of Erie. He was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom in Sarasota, FL.

He was a board member of Security Peoples Bank and of Reed Manufacturing, a member of the Hamot Foundation, and a corporator and trustee of Hamot Medical Center. Barney was a member of the City of Erie Authority (Committee) for higher education. He was a former member of the Kahkwa Club, the University Club, and the Aviation Club, all in Erie, PA. Following his relocation to Florida in recent years, Barney was a member of the Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club. He was an avid golfer and tennis player. Barney enjoyed good food, good wine and good company.

Barney was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Betty Nusbaum Radov in March of this year; and a sister, Anna Radov in 1936. Survivors include three daughters: Lesley Radov and Stephanie Radov both of Atlanta, Georgia; Barbara Radov of Santa Fe, New Mexico,; a son Jay Radov of Owings Hills, Maryland; daughters-in-law Elaine Meizlish of Santa Fe, NM; and Lisa Radov of Owings Mills, MD. He is also survived by his sisters Clare Levin of Sarasota Florida and Mitzi Kerness of Merritt Island, FL. Barney was thrilled to have five wonderful grandchildren: Joshua Murray, Michael Radov, Diane Radov, Daniel Radov and Susan Radov, and multiple nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Sunday at noon at C.B.S. Cemetery with Rabbi Leonard Lifshen officiating. Following the service, a Shiva meal will be served at The Kahkwa Club. The family will sit the rest of the Shiva period at the home of Lesley Radov in Atlanta, GA.
