Barbara Ruth Singer, a vibrant soul with an insatiable passion for art, education, and community service, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 13, 2025, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. She was 81 years old.
Born on November 7, 1943, in New York City, Barbara was the daughter of George Small and the former Rosalie Krassnoff. She grew up in the Riverdale neighborhood, where her love for creativity and culture took root. She attended the High School of Music & Art, a fitting start for a woman whose life would be defined by her deep appreciation for artistic expression. Barbara’s enthusiasm for art was boundless—she eagerly guided her family through museums in every city they visited, sharing her knowledge and joy with those she loved.
Barbara pursued an undergraduate degree at the University of Buffalo, followed by graduate degrees at Columbia University and Edinboro University, sharpening her intellect and commitment to lifelong learning. A dedicated gerontologist, she devoted much of her professional life to improving the lives of older adults. She served on the Pennsylvania State Board of Aging and was actively involved with county initiatives, advocating for policies and programs that supported seniors. Barbara also taught at Edinboro University and Mercyhurst University, where she inspired students with her expertise and passion for gerontology and social good.
Her work with the Jewish community in Erie, Pennsylvania, spanned decades and was marked by significant achievements. Barbara was instrumental in bringing then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Erie, showcasing her ability to foster meaningful connections. She also established educational trips to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC for Edinboro University and several local high schools, ensuring that future generations understood the importance of remembrance and history. She retired from her work in Erie, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication.
Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gerald, and her cherished daughter, Jennifer. She is survived by her devoted son, Geoffrey Singer, her daughter-in-law, Kedra, and her adored grandsons, Asher and Ezra Singer, who brought her immeasurable pride and happiness.
Barbara’s life was a masterpiece of love, learning, and leadership. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched through her warmth and generosity.
A funeral service will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 3:00 PM with Rabbi Robert Morais officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Temple Anshe Hesed Synagogue 5401 Old Zuck Rd, Erie, PA 16506, or the Jewish Federation of North America in Barbara’s honor.
